"I do believe they would sell," said Chris Waddle about Sunderland and Dan Ballard, speaking to BetVictor.
"Sunderland don't need to sell. But they probably will, because that's the way their format's gone now."
Ballard joined from Arsenal in summer 2022 and has made over 100 appearances, helping Sunderland return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017. This season he leads the team for clearances with 180 and aerial duels won with 101, and ranks third for completed passes on 845. He is under contract until 2029, with an option year.
"I think they've gone down that road of Bournemouth and Brentford, who produce players and find players and sell them for ridiculous money."
"But I've not heard anybody after him." He added, "If it means selling somebody for massive profit, I'm sure they'll consider that, definitely."
For now, Ballard and Sunderland focus on the Tyne-Wear derby away at Newcastle United on Sunday.
