Chris Wilder Insists Blades Have “A Lot of Work to be Done” After Goalless Draw | OneFootball

Sheffield United began their 2026/27 Championship campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Birmingham City at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Wilder’s side made a lively start in front of their home supporters and looked to put the visitors under pressure from the opening whistle, with a succession of early corners forcing Birmingham to defend their penalty area.

Birmingham stood firm at the back and gradually worked their way into the contest, with the visitors proving that they would pose a threat on the counter-attack and from set pieces.

Carlos Vicente saw a right-footed effort blocked as Birmingham looked for a way through, before Paik Seung-Ho narrowly missed the target with a glancing header following an excellent delivery from Alex Cochrane.

The visitors continued to grow in confidence as the opening 45 minutes progressed, with United finding it increasingly difficult to establish the attacking rhythm they had shown during pre-season.

Bright Osayi-Samuel came close to breaking the deadlock before the interval when he curled an effort wide of Michael Cooper’s goal after Birmingham had enjoyed their strongest spell of the first half.

The two sides therefore went into the break level, with neither able to find the quality required in the final third to make their pressure count.

Birmingham continued that momentum after the restart and immediately looked the more threatening side.

Vicente had another effort deflected behind before being played through on goal moments later. The winger had an excellent opportunity to test Cooper but opted to pass instead, allowing United to escape without conceding.

Chris Davies’ side continued to cause problems, with Stansfield testing Cooper twice in quick succession as the Blues searched for an opening.

United eventually produced their clearest opportunity of the afternoon with around 15 minutes remaining.

Callum O’Hare picked out Patrick Bamford with a well-weighted through ball, sending the striker into a promising position inside the Birmingham penalty area.

Bamford attempted to make the most of the opportunity, but the angle was against him and his right-footed effort was comfortably dealt with by Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle.

It proved to be one of United’s few genuinely threatening moments in the second half.

Wilder acknowledged afterwards that his side had struggled to retain possession and find the quality required to unlock Birmingham.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Sheffield United boss admitted: “For us, we turned the ball over too cheaply. I always thought it was going to be a game of moments where we had to find a bit of quality and we never found that quality that we were after. Out of possession, we were okay.”

The clean sheet was one of the positives for Wilder, particularly given the defensive concerns surrounding the squad heading into the new campaign.

“A clean sheet is relatively important for us; we have to have something to build on,” he added. “Overall, seven out of 10 for us; a lot of work to be done on the training pitch, trying to improve the team because we’re light in a couple of areas, but I’m sure we can work that one out.”

Wilder also gave his assessment of the performance when speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, admitting that his players were too loose in possession.

“We were just a little too loose with the ball, and we weren’t playing mugs either,” he said. “It was a little bit bitty but it was a result against one of the top teams in the division.”

“They managed to wrestle the ball from us in the second half, but we did manage to tighten things up again,” Wilder explained.

The Blades will now turn their attention towards their first away game of the campaign when they travel to Wales next Saturday afternoon to face Swansea City.
