Manchester City are delighted to announce the signing of England international Beth Mead on a deal until the summer of 2029.

The forward joins the Club from fellow Barclays Women’s Super League side Arsenal, where she won the Barclays Women’s Super League title, three League Cups and a UEFA Champions League across a nine-year spell.

An intelligent, versatile forward, Mead spent the majority of her time in North London out wide and holds the record for the most assists in WSL history.

She spent the first years of her career predominantly as a centre-forward at Sunderland though, becoming the WSL’s youngest Golden Boot winner at just 20, with her current haul of 72 strikes bettered only by Nikita Parris, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Beth England and Vivianne Miedema.

Mead has also excelled on the international scene, helping England twice be crowned European Champions in 2022 and 2025.

Our new number seven played a particular starring role at Euro 2022, finishing as top scorer, top assister and Player of the Tournament, going on to place second in the Ballon d’Or vote for that year while also winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

She currently has 81 senior England caps and 40 goals to her name after finding the net from a free-kick in the Lionesses’ recent World Cup qualifying win over Ukraine in June 2026.

Speaking about the move to City, Mead said: “I’m very proud to be here. Obviously, City had an amazing season last year and I am excited to start a new chapter here.

“I think the way City plays suits me really well, and I feel like it can get something extra out of my game.

“Speaking to the manager, I think it was a place where I think I can really fit into, help and bring a different dynamic to the team, so it was a no-brainer for me.”

Director of Football Therese Sjogran added: “Beth’s achievements in the game speak for themselves, so we’re delighted to bring her to the Club.

“Winning the Double last season was a special chapter in our history, but it’s one we want to build on in the coming seasons. Signing a player of Beth’s quality and calibre can only help that happen.

“She’s shown what it takes to consistently perform on the kind of big stages we want to regularly be competing at, so she’ll be a brilliant addition to our already impressive squad of players.”

Gamechanger

City secured a WSL and FA Cup double in 2025/26 for the first time in our history, but the challenge now is to build on that success in the coming seasons.

The Blues responded well to the pressure of being ‘the hunted’ rather than ‘the hunter’ last season but, with two titles to defend and a return to European football on the cards, experience at the highest level is needed to bolster an already top-class squad.

That’s exactly what Mead’s acquisition presents.

With two European Championship medals on her CV, alongside one UEFA Champions League, one WSL title and three League Cups, City have secured the services of a serial winner.

The numbers speak for themselves – Mead has more assists in the WSL (54) than any other player in the competition’s history and also ranks joint-fifth in the all-time goal rankings, with 72.

Whether it’s finishing off the chance herself or creating for the likes of Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Vivianne Miedema – two of the English game’s greatest-ever goalscorers – our new number seven’s declaration that City could bring even more out of her game is a tantalising prospect.

She also boasts a proven track record of performing in the biggest moments.

Named Euro 2022’s Player of the Tournament, Mead registered 11 goal involvements in just six matches as England secured their first major honour in 56 years and was again a key member of the squad as the Lionesses retained the title three years later – the first time her nation had won a major tournament on foreign soil.

Then there’s the UEFA Champions League final in 2025, when Mead’s clever reverse pass to Stina Blackstenius unlocked the Barcelona defence to deliver a 1-0 win for Arsenal.

Time and again, our new number seven has turned up when it matters for club and country, but it’s her versatility and tactical intelligence which is perhaps most overlooked.

Starting out as a centre-forward, she’s the WSL’s youngest-ever Golden Boot winner, thanks to her 12 goals in 18 appearances as a 20-year-old for Sunderland in 2015, before then spending the majority of the past nine years out wide in a front three or four.

Her potency in front of goal, either as the creator or the finisher, is adaptable based on the demands of the team – an essential asset for any side looking to compete in both the WSL and across the continent.

That’s certainly the aim for City, and Mead is likely to be a central piece in that puzzle.
