Clément Lenglet is in Portugal to finalise a move to Benfica, set to join on loan from Atlético Madrid with an obligation to buy next summer, Record reports.

The agreement would see the France international leave Atlético permanently next summer, then sign for Benfica until 2029. The structure also protects the player, previously contracted in Madrid until 2028, ensuring continuity at the Luz.

There will be no immediate outlay for Benfica. In return, Atlético are to receive a percentage of any future sale, a move that trims their wage bill and aids compliance with financial fair play.

Lenglet was unlikely to earn minutes under Diego Simeone if he stayed. Benfica acted on his surplus status to land a profile admired by Marco Silva.

Aged 31, he welcomed Benfica’s project. The chance to compete at the highest level in Europe and chase trophies proved decisive, leading him to prioritise the Luz over Saudi Arabia.

Official confirmation is expected after medical and fitness checks, scheduled to conclude tomorrow. He arrived on Monday at Tires Airport, marking the start of his Benfica spell.
