Concacaf has urged a full review of FIFA’s presidency after Gianni Infantino dropped a proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup. It comes amid mounting pressure on the FIFA president.
According to L'Équipe, the confederation on Saturday welcomed Infantino’s decision to abandon the plan and praised the game’s unity, saying members stood together to protect football’s long-term interests and good governance. It had already opposed the proposal earlier in the week.
Despite that, Concacaf said the World Cup’s future had been handled outside established governance frameworks, without transparency, consultation or due process. It described the affair as a symptom of governance that no longer puts football first, and said a comprehensive review of this presidency is imperative.
The confederation’s concerns are shared elsewhere, with UEFA said to have asked Infantino to resign.
Concacaf added that its members on the FIFA Council will engage directly, and through the Council, to ensure questions of governance, accountability and leadership are addressed properly via the institutions and procedures set out in FIFA’s statutes.
