CONCACAF questions FIFA process over Gianni Infantino plan to sell World Cup stakes | OneFootball

CONCACAF has criticised FIFA’s handling of Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell stakes in the World Cup, citing procedural concerns while not opposing the idea in principle.

According to L'Équipe, the response, issued on Wednesday, followed a video in which the FIFA president confirmed he wants to sell World Cup stakes and described it as a democratic process. The confederation learned of the proposal only through media reports and, later, a press release.

The North and Central American body voiced deep concern over an apparent lack of respect for legal procedures. It said decisions must be guided by good governance, rigorous processes and a long-term vision.

It also shared the disappointment of many in its region and across the game that detailed plans were made public before any discussion with governance bodies and relevant stakeholders.

While not opposing the principle, CONCACAF stressed that FIFA, the confederations and each member association must always act in the best interests of football. It offered no further detail on the substance of the proposal.

The intervention places CONCACAF within a growing backlash against Infantino’s project, led by UEFA.
