Conmebol confirms Memphis cleared to play for Corinthians against Estudiantes | OneFootball

Conmebol has confirmed Memphis is free to face Estudiantes in Corinthians’ Libertadores quarter-final second leg at Neo Química Arena on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time, despite the Argentine club’s bid to suspend him.

According to Globo.com, Conmebol will wait for Corinthians’ defence until 17 September, one day after the game, before ruling on the Dutch forward over his gesture towards Estudiantes supporters during the first leg in La Plata.

The incident came as Kaio César’s second-half goal made it 1-1, with Memphis pointing his middle finger at the home end while running to celebrate with his team-mate.

Estudiantes have referred the case to the confederation’s disciplinary unit, alleging breaches of two code articles that cover unsporting conduct using offensive terms or gestures, and provoking spectators, both punishable by at least a one-match ban or a time-based suspension.

With the first leg drawn, the winner on 16 September will reach the semi-finals, and if the tie is level again it will be decided on penalties. Any sanction would apply only in the semi-final if Corinthians advance.
