Corinthians have lodged an appeal to clear André Luiz to face São Paulo in Sunday’s Majestoso at Neo Química Arena, with the case due to be heard on Thursday. According to Meu Timao, the club want the midfielder available pending that ruling.
André Luiz was sent off in the win over Vasco da Gama for a heavy challenge on Thiago Mendes.
The Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva handed him a two-match suspension, covering Mirassol, already served, and São Paulo.
He was charged under article 254, sections I and II, of the Código Brasileiro de Justiça Desportiva for violent conduct following the tackle that led to a first-half dismissal.
Corinthians’ defence, led by Sergio Engelberg, argued he went for the ball, has no record of violent behaviour, and that no serious injury was proven as the Vasco player stayed on.
Amid the uncertainty over whether Fernando Diniz can select him for the derby, the midfielder is preparing for Wednesday night’s Copa Libertadores meeting with Independiente Santa Fe.
