According to Globo.com, Corinthians sit in the relegation zone with 18 points and a 37% return after 16 rounds, marking their fourth-worst campaign of the points-era Brasileirão.

This season the team have only four wins and are the league’s lowest scorers, with 14 goals at an average of 0.87 per game.

The figures are better only than 2024, 2006 and 2023, when they had 12, 13 and 17 points respectively, and in each of those years they flirted with relegation. In 2007, the season that ended in a drop to Série B, they had 20 points after 16 matches.

After Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Botafogo, head coach Fernando Diniz voiced strong dissatisfaction, saying he immediately checked whether they had fallen into the bottom four. He called the feeling horrible, said Corinthians cannot remain in this position and that the squad must do everything possible to get out and not return.

Inside the club, there is a belief the group are too strong to be where they are. Before the campaign, the stated aim was to challenge near the top and secure next year’s Conmebol Libertadores place.

Corinthians travel to Uruguay to face Peñarol in Montevideo on Thursday at 21:30 Brasília time in the Libertadores. They then host Atlético-MG at Neo Química Arena on Sunday at 18:30 Brasília time in the Brasileiro.
