Corinthians settle on Rodrigo Garro as captain after 2026 armband rotation | OneFootball

Corinthians began 2026 rotating the armband, but Fernando Diniz has since installed Rodrigo Garro as permanent captain and the team’s on-field leader.

According to Meu Timao, Hugo Souza, Gustavo Henrique and André Ramalho also captained this year, each bringing different strands of leadership inside the dressing room.

Garro and Gustavo arrived in early 2024. The midfielder signed from Talleres as a flagship recruit, while the defender joined under António Oliveira to add experience at the back.

Back then the captains were Cássio, Fagner and Ángel Romero. After Ramón Díaz took charge, Romero wore the armband with Fagner as deputy, then a late-2024 reshuffle brought in Hugo and Ramalho as Romero and Fagner lost starts.

Díaz handed the band to Hugo, who helped lift the 2025 Campeonato Paulista, won against Palmeiras, the club’s 31st state title.

Dorival Júnior arrived in April 2025 and, with IFAB restricting dialogue to captains, moved the role to Gustavo Henrique, judging an outfielder better placed to speak to referees.

Gustavo led through to March 2026, occasionally sharing duties with academy product Maycon and the decorated Romero. In the 2025 Copa do Brasil triumph, a 2-1 win over Vasco at the Maracanã, he let both raise the trophy, the club’s fourth.

After Maycon and Romero departed at the end of 2025, leadership centred on Gustavo alongside Garro and Hugo, who together lifted the 2026 Supercopa do Brasil after beating Flamengo 2-0.

Under Diniz, appointed in April, Garro has worn the armband in 14 of 16 matches and returned to the starting line-up. Gustavo did so twice when the Argentine began on the bench. Hugo captained two games this season and Ramalho one, and the 34-year-old also runs the fines fund shared with CT Dr Joaquim Grava staff.

In 2026 Corinthians have played 37 matches, winning 16, drawing 11 and losing 10, and claimed the Supercopa. They are in mid-season preparations and face FC Cascavel on Sunday at 16:00 at Estádio Olímpico Regional in Paraná.

Next up are the Brasileirão, last-16 ties in the Copa do Brasil against Internacional and the Libertadores against Rosário Central, and a 23 July home league meeting with Remo at 19:30.
