Corinthians slipped to 10th in the Brasileirão after a 2-1 defeat to Coritiba at the end of round 24, leaving them on 32 points.
According to Meu Timao, the Paraná side overtook them, rising to eighth with 34 points after starting the round on 31. Had Corinthians won, they would have gone eighth on 35, level with Red Bull Bragantino but behind on number of victories.
Results on Monday prevented a further slide, as Botafogo lost to Athletico Paranaense. Corinthians closed the round seven points behind Cruzeiro, the last team in the G5, and eight clear of Mirassol, who sit just inside the relegation zone.
It marked a second successive league defeat, following a 2-1 loss to Cruzeiro at Neo Química Arena the previous weekend. Since the World Cup break, Fernando Diniz’s side have two wins, two draws and two defeats.
Corinthians host Santos on Sunday at 16:00 at Neo Química Arena. Victory would take them to 35 points and could move them closer to the G5, depending on other results.
