In Corralejo, a Leeds United supporters’ branch fills The York bar on matchdays for holidaymakers and locals.
The Leeds United Supporters’ Club Fuerteventura was set up and is run by John Holliday, a former Elland Road season-ticket holder who moved to the island 15 years ago. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, he launched the branch to recognise the fanbase and bring people together to watch games.
Leeds are among the best-represented teams in the town, alongside Newcastle. The York, on Calle Juan de Austria, has about 25 seats yet often hosts over 40 fans, including visitors from across the island. A peak of 65 turned up for last season’s FA Cup tie against Harrogate Town.
Regulars swap stories and seat locations back at Elland Road. A Tottenham fixture drew 15 fantasy-football travellers from England, lifting the crowd to 64. Victory over Manchester United brought an especially raucous atmosphere.
With Leeds touring the United States for pre-season, time zones could complicate viewing. Fuerteventura shares UK time, both five hours ahead of the US east coast. Wrexham in Tampa and Sunderland in New Jersey start at 12.30am UK time, while Liverpool in Chicago kicks off at 8pm on Saturday August 2.
Leeds are then expected to face RB Leipzig at Elland Road on the weekend of August 8/9, before Manchester United in Dublin the following Wednesday. The bar plans to show all friendlies, though US kick-off times may be prohibitive. The bar flies a permanent flag and runs a Facebook page to guide supporters.
