FLW's Coventry City fan pundit has given his verdict on reports linking them with James Maddison and Mason Mount
Coventry City are celebrating their Championship title triumph after a gruelling campaign.
The Sky Blues have ended their 25-year absence from top flight football by clinching top spot in the second division under Frank Lampard.
The club had come close to earning promotion in two of the last three seasons but suffered play-off disappointment against Luton Town and Sunderland.
Coventry’s promotion has led to intense speculation over potential transfer plans, as they set out to build a team capable of surviving in the Premier League long-term.
It has already been reported that Brighton loanee Carl Rushworth could make the permanent move to the CBS Arena.
But the club have also been linked with moves for Mason Mount and James Maddison in what could be an ambitious summer ahead for the newly-promoted side.

When asked about a possible move for Mount, FLW’s Coventry fan pundit Chris Deez claimed that the Man United star is a very good player but that he’s not somebody that the Sky Blues should be considering a deal for this summer.
He believes that the midfielder’s injury record and the likely cost of his wages are both too much of a risk for the club to chase a reunion between him and his former manager at Derby County and Chelsea Lampard.
“Being back in the big time is crazy, I kind of forgot what it was like in terms of transfer rumours because all of the nonsense has started already,” Deez told Football League World.
“And the season hasn’t even ended yet.
“Mason Mount is still a very good player, and he’s one of those who you sort of feel needs a move away from Man United to recapture his form and get back to the player that he used to be, because obviously long, long injury lay-offs have really hurt him, forced him out of the team and he’s struggled to get back into it.
“That’s just part and parcel of football and injuries, but he’s got to be on £150,000 to 200,000-a-week, I would imagine.
“Even if Man United pay a large percentage of it, it’s surely still going to be out of our remit.
“I’d love to be welcoming back players like Mount and Maddison, but again another one that’s been plagued by injuries.
“I don’t want us to just be a team that’s giving second chances to players, I don’t want us to be bringing in high profile names.
“They’re not going to want to sit on the bench, they’re going to want to go straight into the starting lineup, but when they’ve been inactive for so long that’s a massive risk on our part.”
While Deez has cited Maddison as a potential dream signing due to his connection with Coventry, he believes that many of the same risks are present with his return to the CBS Arena as a possible deal for Mount, and that this summer is not the time for him to come back to the club.
“Maddison is obviously one of the dream signings, bring back the local boy and come here to finish off his career,” he added.
“He’s still got massive affinity with the fans, with the club, he’s still back here because he runs some charities in the local area, but again he’s got to be on £150 to 200,000, and Doug King, I can’t see him stretching any further than £50,000 for our new wage cap.
“Both terrifically talented fantastic players when they’re on their A-game, and when they’re fighting, fit and in-form, but I don’t think they’re what we need.
“I don’t think we need to be going for these hugely ambitious swoops, I think we need to spend the money wisely, I don’t think we want to be breaking our record fee more than a couple of times.
“I can’t imagine we’re going to spend more than £15 million, £20 million at most, on one player this summer, especially if Rushworth is going to be joining.
“It’s looking more and more likely he’s going to be £15 to 20 million alone, we’ve got to have one eye on the Championship the season after because we might be going back down there.
“We don’t want to be having players on silly money who we might struggle to move on if we get relegated.”
Maddison came through the ranks of the Coventry academy system before becoming a first team player.
He made 35 league appearances for the Sky Blues before joining Norwich in 2016, and has gone on to play for Leicester City and now Tottenham Hotspur.
The England international has yet to make a single appearance for the London outfit this year, with an ACL injury suffered in May 2025 keeping him out of action.
However, he made his return to the bench for Spurs’ 2-2 draw against Brighton last month, indicating he could yet play a role before the campaign comes to a close.
Tottenham are at risk of suffering relegation to the Championship under Roberto de Zerbi, with the team two points adrift of safety with four games to go.
On paper, adding Maddison or Mount to the Coventry squad could be massively exciting, and a sign of their progress into the Premier League.
However, both deals carry great risks, and it is not worth it for the club to take that kind of gamble at this stage.
The Sky Blues will need to show some ambition this summer and back Lampard in the transfer market, but they also need to spend within their means and with a view to the long-term.
The injury record and potential wage costs of both players are both too great for Coventry to consider an approach at this stage, and neither deal should be pursued unless either of those factors change.
