The Sky Blues forward has been omitted from his national team's current squad

With the Championship season approaching its conclusion, it is fair to say that many star performers in the second tier will have an eye on developments beyond May 2nd.

For all 24 sides in the Championship, there is a maximum of eight matches to play between now and the end of the regular 46-game season, whilst four will then turn their attention to the hopes of achieving promotion to the Premier League through the lottery of the play-offs.

Beyond that, though, is the newly-formatted FIFA World Cup which is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, as the competition holds 48 nations for the first time ever.

Unsurprisingly, there are several stars from the EFL who will believe they hold a strong chance of being selected by their respective nations to partake in football's biggest showpiece event, which was last won by Argentina in a historic final against France in Qatar back in December 2022.

Despite the controversies which have surrounded the upcoming tournament - largely from a political standpoint - it is still, arguably, the highest honour for any professional footballer to have by representing their country on the biggest stage of all.

Coventry City certainly have two strikers who will feel they have a strong chance of doing exactly that, with the goals of Haji Wright - who could take part in a 'home tournament' for the USMNT - and Brandon Thomas-Asante firing the Sky Blues to within touching distance of the Premier League.

The latter, though, has recently revealed some frustrating personal news about his international situation, although it could still prove beneficial to City in their final seven Championship fixtures.

The 27-year-old has certainly had an intriguing season for the league leaders, having reached a double-figure goal tally by November before sustaining a hamstring injury.

After his return, the 12-goal striker was then banned for three games earlier in 2026 for violent conduct after swinging an elbow towards Pelle Mattsson of Norwich City in the 2-1 loss on January 26th.

However, Thomas-Asante has scored twice in his last three matches against Preston North End and Swansea City, subsequently receiving a call-up to the Ghana squad for their upcoming friendlies against Austria and Germany.

The seven-time international would have certainly relished being back on the international scene, until it was revealed that he and Inaki Williams were withdrawn from the squad and replaced by Ransford Yeboah of Konigsdorfer due to injury concerns.

Although the extent of Thomas-Asante's injury - which was reportedly sustained against the Swans - hasn't been made clear, the Sky Blues striker took to Instagram to issue a personal statement on such developments.

"Frustrating to miss out on camp with the team, which is always an honour I hold highly," he said.

"Upon collaborative advice of both Ghana and Coventry, I'll focus on maintaining fitness for an important few months for both club and country."

Brandon Thomas-Asante could have a fun end to the 2025/26 season

It remains to be seen if Thomas-Asante will be available for the Good Friday clash with Derby County at the CBS Arena, but the forward could still be on for a fun end to the campaign on a personal note.

With City just a handful of weeks away from likely ending a 25-year exile from the Premier League, Thomas-Asante is also on track for a first campaign at top-flight level in his career.

Furthermore, he will also be relishing the prospects of featuring at the World Cup, even more so when the Black Stars are in the same group as England.

The Three Lions will face off against the African nation on June 23rd in the second of three matches in Group L at the Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, either side of clashes with Croatia and Panama.
