Cuiabá have been hit with a FIFA transfer ban over an unpaid debt of about R$ 4 million owed to coach Petit, who led the side in 2024. According to Globo.com, the club president confirmed the sanction and said they have 60 days to settle the arrears.

The ban prevents Cuiabá from registering new players while it remains in force, and will be lifted only once the obligation is cleared by the governing body.

Explaining the situation, the president said the club is struggling to pay because of sums still outstanding from other Brazilian teams. He blamed non-payment by Corinthians, Santos, Grêmio and Atlético-MG, and questioned how a club with R$ 42 million due could be in this position. He added he would find a way to pay.

The Portuguese coach was in charge from May to December 2024. At the time, the club said Petit asked to resign after a meeting with the board and left after almost four months in the job.

Cuiabá said the departure was for personal reasons. The club added that Petit set out why continuing had become unsustainable and said he felt unable to help the team further.
