According to Globo.com, Cuiabano will miss Wednesday’s Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg against Vitória at 21:30 Brasília time, as Vasco rest the left-back.

Coach Pedro Emanuel is preserving him with the Brasileirão meeting with Cruzeiro in mind, then the return at Barradão next week.

The medical team and coaching staff assessed his workload after he reported muscle pain in the 4-1 defeat by Palmeiras on Sunday, when Avellar replaced him in the second half.

They judged he could play, but with the tie only starting and the team in the relegation zone, the risk of aggravation led them to rule it out.

Lucas Piton and Avellar are competing to start at left-back. Paulinho will also be in the squad.

Avellar impressed against Palmeiras and drew praise from Pedro Emanuel in his press conference. Piton is viewed as the immediate deputy on the left and has featured in four matches under the Portuguese coach.

The opener is at São Januário on Wednesday. The second leg is next Wednesday at Barradão, with live coverage on TV Globo, sportv and Premiere.
