D. Cuenca rivals Santos boast 58% record against Ecuadorians

This Wednesday, Santos will make its debut in the Copa Sudamericana. The opponent, in a first-ever meeting, will be Deportivo Cuenca of Ecuador at 7 p.m. (Brasília time) at Alejandro Serrano Aguilar Stadium. Despite facing the team for the first time, the team from Vila Belmiro holds a slight edge against Ecuadorian clubs.

Since the 3-1 win over Emelec on January 11, 1959, in a friendly played in Guayaquil, with two goals from Pelé and one from Coutinho, Santos has already played 27 matches against teams from Ecuador. So far, there have been 14 wins, four draws, and nine losses, with 53 goals scored and 37 conceded, for an overall success rate of 58.1%.

In the 1950s and 1960s, there were only four matches against clubs from Ecuador. It was only from the 1990s onward that meetings with opponents from that country became more frequent.

The most recent meeting came in the 2022 Copa Sudamericana, when Santos beat Universidad Católica 1-0 in the fourth round of that tournament’s group stage.

In total, Santos has already faced seven Ecuadorian clubs. LDU Quito is the biggest opponent with 11 matches — five wins, one draw, and five losses. Next comes Barcelona of Guayaquil, with seven meetings (three wins, one draw, and three losses). The other rivals are Universidad Católica, El Nacional, Emelec, Delfín, and Aucas.
