Daniel Farke says Dominic Calvert-Lewin is among the Premier League’s best English strikers and that any England return hinges on sustained consistency.

The Leeds United forward headed in during Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Brentford, his fourth goal in as many games, sparking talk of a possible call-up by Thomas Tuchel for March’s internationals and maybe next summer’s tournament.

Farke, a close ally of Tuchel, said he could call him any time but would not offer advice, stressing the 28-year-old’s quality is not in doubt and that selection rests on consistent performances over months, adding there is no limit and he has a chance.

“It’s always the goal to play for your country and to represent your country at a World Cup. For me my job is to do as best as possible for Leeds United and that is what I am here to do, the rest takes care of itself.” He told Sky Sports.

Calvert-Lewin has four goals in 11 caps and has not been called up for more than four years, last involved at the delayed Euro 2021 final.

He has the chance to make it five in five against Crystal Palace in Saturday’s 8pm kick-off at Elland Road, after Palace requested the fixture be brought forward a day because of their League Cup quarter-final with Arsenal on Tuesday. Lukas Nmecha has not recovered in time from a hamstring injury, while Daniel James and Sean Longstaff remain long-term absentees with hamstring and calf problems respectively.
