David Bruce is closing in on a reunion with a long-serving Sunderland figure as Sheffield Wednesday step up their off-field rebuild.

Sunderland Echo understands that Oscar Chamberlain has left his role at the Stadium of Light and is nearing a move to Hillsborough to rejoin Bruce.

Bruce departed Wearside earlier this year to become Wednesday’s chief executive after the club was taken over by American consortium Arise Capital Partners. He is helping to drive a major reset following years of instability under former chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Chamberlain spent 12 years at Sunderland, shaping branding, digital, marketing and communications during a period of significant change. Parts of the club’s supporter-facing output won awards under his watch.

His anticipated switch is expected to be into a new, slightly different role rather than replacing long-serving head of communications Trevor Braithwait, who remains in post. The hire is part of a broader plan to strengthen Wednesday’s senior structure, with further appointments expected.

Preparing for League One, Wednesday are also expected to confirm former Sunderland and Stockport County figure Simon Wilson as sporting director. He is believed to have begun outline work on early transfer discussions and contract talks.

For Sunderland, Chamberlain’s exit marks another behind-the-scenes change after a historic seventh-placed Premier League finish and Europa League qualification. Ian Taylor, formerly of Burnley, has been installed as interim head of communications while a full-time hire is advertised.
