Scottish giants Rangers FC are currently tasting Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl medicine amid Red Bull Salzburg talks...
There was a time when Sheffield Wednesday supporters feared Danny Rohl would outgrow Hillsborough, with the German ending up with Scottish giants Rangers eventually.
Danny Rohl arrived during one of the most turbulent periods in the club's recent history but quickly established himself as one of the most highly-rated young coaches in the English game. Against the odds, he steered Sheffield Wednesday to Championship survival before overseeing a far more stable campaign the following season.
Just as importantly, he reconnected the Wednesday supporters with a team that had often looked directionless beforehand and for most of their time under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri. As a result, Rohl became immensely popular among the Hillsborough faithful.
Many fans hoped he would be the man to lead the club into a brighter future, but there was always an acceptance that bigger opportunities could eventually come calling.
When Rangers moved to appoint him last summer, Wednesday supporters were understandably disappointed but not entirely surprised.

We are now 12 months on from that and Sheffield Wednesday are in League One after securing a final finish of zero points in the Championship in 2025/26 under Rohl's replacement, Henrik Pedersen.
However, as we are also that length of time from Rohl's departure, it appears the situation has come full circle.
Reports from Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg linking Rohl with a return to the Red Bull football group at Salzburg have left Rangers supporters facing the same uncertainty that Sheffield Wednesday fans experienced a year ago. The irony will not be lost on many in South Yorkshire.
When Rohl left Wednesday, plenty of Rangers supporters viewed it as a natural step up. The chance to manage one of Scotland's biggest clubs was difficult to ignore and, in truth, few could blame him for taking the opportunity.
Yet, football certainly has a habit of moving quickly, particularly when young and ambitious coaches are involved.
Rohl's reputation has continued to grow during his time at Ibrox. Even though opinions on his spell have not been universally positive, he still has a significant number of backers who believe he is the right man to take the club forward. They finished third behind Celtic and Hearts in the end, but there is plenty to like about Rohl's coaching.
His tactical credentials remain highly regarded and there is a feeling among some supporters that he has not yet had enough time to fully implement his vision. That is why the prospect of losing him now feels particularly frustrating. For Sheffield Wednesday fans, the emotions may sound familiar.
They spent months listening to speculation linking their manager with jobs elsewhere, only to eventually see him depart. The sense of disappointment was heightened by the fact that Rohl had become such a popular figure and appeared central to the club's long-term plans.
In truth, had the Chansiri era ended sooner, perhaps Rohl would have remained in charge of Wednesday. As it is, a bigger fish came calling, and they are one with more financial muscle at this moment in time too.

Rangers supporters are now experiencing a similar scenario to that with Wednesday. Of course, Salzburg are not a club with as much history as Rangers, nor do they have the same resources, but Rohl has been a part of RB Leipzig's set up and the move has to be tempting to him.
The potential move to Salzburg also highlights a reality that many clubs outside the absolute elite must confront. Successful managers are simply difficult to keep hold of. When a coach builds a strong reputation, opportunities will inevitably arise elsewhere. It is the same challenge Sheffield Wednesday faced.
Of course, there is still no guarantee that Rohl leaves Ibrox. Football moves quickly and situations can change rapidly. However, the fact that serious questions are being asked about his future demonstrates how highly he continues to be regarded within the game.
Should he depart, Rangers fans may gain an even greater appreciation of how Sheffield Wednesday supporters felt when one of their most popular managers in recent memory decided to move on. In many ways, they are now receiving a dose of the very same Rohl medicine that Hillsborough had to swallow just 12 months ago.
