Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield might not have been flawless, but for David Lynch and Liverpool fans, it was another step forward under Arne Slot. Speaking on his post-match reaction podcast from the Anfield press box, Liverpool reporter David Lynch highlighted five clear takeaways from the Reds’ victory.
Lynch opened by addressing the ongoing narrative that Liverpool haven’t been at their best: “There’ll be plenty of pundits suggesting after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Everton… that Liverpool weren’t quite at their best.” However, he stressed that results like these are what define a title challenge.
He pointed out that Liverpool made it “15 points out of 15 to start the Premier League season” and reminded viewers: “This has been the early kickoff. It’s a derby… and yet Liverpool have won it.”
Lynch called for supporters to embrace the result rather than overanalyse: “Just celebrate Slot, his players and a magnificent start under very, very difficult circumstances.”
Of all the players on the pitch, one stood out clearly in Lynch’s analysis: “Oh my goodness, for me he is one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment.” He praised Gravenberch for his stunning goal and overall performance.
Lynch highlighted the assist that followed: “He follows that up by teeing up Ekitike with a beautifully weighted through ball.” On top of that, he cited the stats, “five tackles, six out of nine ground duels won”, calling him both technically gifted and combative.

He responded strongly to criticism of Gravenberch’s role as a number six: “There are some people out there who aren’t convinced… it’s hard to believe after a game like today.”
Lynch offered insight into the current limitations facing Arne Slot’s side. “They’ve just played three games in six days,” he noted, sharing what Slot told the press. “We can barely train between these games.”
Slot’s tactical freedom is limited, according to Lynch: “We can’t really do anything tactically unusual because we just don’t have the time on the pitch.” Despite that, Lynch maintained, “Liverpool were excellent in this game,” especially considering Everton had a full week to prepare.
Another standout for Lynch was left-back Milos Kerkez. Despite early-season criticism, Lynch defended the 21-year-old: “He was pretty flawless really through this.” He cited stats including “89 percent passing accuracy” and praised his aerial ability: “He’s very, very good in the air for someone who’s not the tallest.”
While acknowledging Kerkez was “at the scene of the crime” for Everton’s goal, Lynch gave the benefit of the doubt, saying it may have been a trip. Overall, he called it “another step forward” for the young defender.

Throughout the analysis, Lynch returned to one theme, Liverpool’s mentality. “These are not just elite footballers… but also that elite mentality in terms of grinding it out,” he said.
He wrapped up by reminding fans: “15 points out of 15 with all the things that have been going on around them. I just think it’s unbelievable.” It’s clear from Lynch’s words that Slot’s Liverpool is building not just performances, but belief.
As Lynch concluded, this result though “not the best Liverpool performance you’re ever going to see” was a testament to grit and unity. “They still battled through against the local rivals to claim the win,” he said. For Lynch and Liverpool fans alike, that’s more than enough.
