Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Dayann Methalie after reaching a £25.7m agreement with Toulouse. The 20-year-old arrived in the North East on Sunday night ahead of a medical today.

He is expected to sign a five-year contract once final checks are complete. Reports in France claim Toulouse have secured a sell-on percentage of between 10 and 15 per cent, a clause not yet confirmed by Sunderland.

The package comprises £24m guaranteed plus £1.7m in add-ons. The defender flew from Toulouse at around eight on Sunday on a private jet with his family and arrived later that evening.

His medical is scheduled for Monday and, provided there are no late issues, the club could unveil him later today or early this week.

The agreement follows a lengthy pursuit in which several bids were rejected before terms were settled. Florent Ghisolfi and Sunderland held firm in talks, with the final structure understood to include more guaranteed money and fewer sums tied to future payments.
