Sunderland are edging towards an agreement with Toulouse to sign top target Dayann Methalie after significant progress in talks.

Sunderland Echo understands there is growing confidence a deal can be completed, though it has not yet been finalised. The 20-year-old is keen on the move, leaving the Black Cats well placed once final terms are agreed.

Methalie would be the club’s second summer signing, following Thomas Meunier’s arrival as a free agent earlier this summer.

The clubs have been negotiating for weeks, and a larger up front payment appears to be the key to a breakthrough.

For the second successive week, Methalie was omitted from Toulouse’s pre-season friendly squad.
