Luis Suárez changed it in the 35th minute with a cool penalty, setting Sporting CP on their way to a 4-1 win at Rio Ave. The Colombia forward leads Liga Portugal's scoring on 27 this season.
Suárez earned the spot kick under a challenge from Francisco Petrasso, then stroked the finish into the bottom left (35.). After the restart, he won another free kick in the attacking half (52.). Moments later, Petrasso received a second yellow and was sent off.
He kept stretching the defence, heading wide from the centre of the box as chances mounted (63.). Earlier, he teed up Pedro Gonçalves for a clear opening after a corner (59.).
He finished with six attempts, one key pass and 14 touches in the box, his movement pinning Rio Ave's back line. With Leões enjoying 64.1% possession, his six ball recoveries helped keep the visitors on the front foot.
Leões host Gil Vicente next. Rio Ave visit Casa Pia.
