Deniz Undav came off the bench to score twice as Germany beat Côte d'Ivoire 2-1.

L'Équipe notes Germany had not felt such late drama since Toni Kroos's 90+4 free-kick against Sweden in 2018.

After a 30 minute cameo against Curaçao bringing one goal and two assists in a 7-1 win, he entered on the hour for Jamal Musiala and swept in Nadiem Amiri's cross on 68 minutes.

He then converted Felix Nmecha's pass at 90+4. His five goal involvements as a substitute across two outings already match Roger Milla's 1990 World Cup tally.

The 29 year old rose from Havelse and Meppen to Union Saint-Gilloise, hitting 17 then 26 goals, before Brighton, where he scored five in 22. At Stuttgart he truly broke through as they finished second.

He debuted in March 2024, playing 10 minutes in a 2-1 win over France at Groupama Stadium, and featured for only six minutes at the home Euros. His record is 11 caps, 9 goals and 4 assists.

Club returns of 18, 9 and 19 goals justify his place. His impact could continue against Ecuador on 25 June at 22:00, and while Kai Havertz still has the edge, Undav could yet be decisive through to a possible final on his 30th birthday, 19 July. A fifth star would be the finest gift.
