Désiré Doué won a penalty that Kylian Mbappé converted to put France ahead against Paraguay in the World Cup last 16 on Saturday after 70 minutes of toil.
Driving through the heart of the defence, the PSG player burst past four opponents before being clipped by a stray knee.
Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev, lenient for much of the match, finally awarded it after a VAR review.
As the Albirroja massed around the spot in an attempt to distract him, Mbappé kept his composure and sent Oscar Gill the wrong way.
France are in front at last, but it remains a gruelling contest against an extremely low and physical Paraguayan block.
