The draw for the first round of the 2026–27 DFB Cup was held recently. Now it’s clear when FC Bayern will take the field.
The record champions already knew who their opponent would be. Bayern will travel to face VfL Osnabrück. This is no easy matchup against a team that has pulled off a surprise or two in the cup in the past.
As the German Football Association announced on Wednesday, Munich’s opening match against the second-division promoted team will kick off on Wednesday, September 2, at 8:45 p.m.
This match will also mark the conclusion of the first main round.
The match featuring the record-holding Cup champion will be broadcast on both the pay-TV provider Sky and ARD . Interestingly, FCB will not be playing during the actual Cup weekend, which is scheduled a good two weeks earlier.
The reason is obvious: Bayern will be playing the Super Cup match against runner-up Borussia Dortmund on that weekend. In recent years, the Super Cup has taken place during the main Cup weekend, which is why the matches for both teams were rescheduled—a move that drew criticism.

Bayern enters the new season as the defending champion, and after a long drought without a cup title, the team naturally wants to win it again. A lot will change at Osnabrück between now and the cup match. After a promotion, there’s generally some turnover in a team’s roster.
However, it’s safe to assume that Bayern will face stiff resistance at the famous Bremer Brücke. There have been three matches between Osnabrück and Bayern so far, all in the Cup. In 2004, Bayern scraped through with a 3–2 win; in 2001, they won 2–0; and in 1978, they even lost in a 4–5 thriller.
