Harry Kane is unstoppable at FC Bayern. Now Uli Hoeneß has given a remarkable assessment of the goalscorer’s past. The honorary president also looks back on the risky transfer.

The transfer of Harry Kane in the summer of 2023 was considered historic – and not just because of the transfer fee. Looking back, Uli Hoeneß now makes it clear that the deal was by no means without doubt at the time. In an interview with kicker, the long-serving Bayern boss described how difficult the decision surrounding the multi-million investment was.

„We really struggled with it, it was a sound barrier that we had never broken before,“ explained Hoeneß. It was the first time the Munich club had considered a three-digit million sum for a player – a move that was the subject of intense internal debate.

His assessment of Kane’s form at the time was particularly surprising. „Harry hadn’t played that well at Tottenham before that. That was a certain risk,“ Hoeneß continued. Despite these doubts, those responsible decided to transfer the England international striker.

Looking back on his time at FC Bayern, however, Hoeneß paints a completely different picture. The attacker had improved significantly in Munich and had become a central factor. „But he has played incredibly here over the last few years,“ emphasized the 74-year-old.

„If he’s worth 150, Harry is worth 250 million euros“

Hoeneß now also sees the transfer in a different light in economic terms. The comparison with other top transfers is clear: „If we consider the price-performance ratio, the 150 million … Look at Alexander Isak from Liverpool, he cost 150 million euros.“ For the honorary president, it is therefore clear how high Kane’s value is: „If he’s worth 150, Harry is worth 250 million euros.“

Hoeneß also emphasized the striker’s further development in Munich. In particular, his versatile game has continued to develop under coach Vincent Kompany. Kane now contributes in all phases of the game and also takes on defensive responsibility.

Hoeneß also raves about Kane’s qualities off the pitch, saying the attacker is „a role model for our young players“ and is held in high regard within the team. Hoeneß has also expressed a clear opinion on Kane’s future.
