Dino Toppmöller said he was left stunned by his premature exit from RC Lens, where he was dismissed in mid-September. Speaking on the Spielmacher von 360Media podcast, the German called the decision a huge disappointment and a shock.
He said being told that if his assistant remained in post he would be the one to go was a heavy blow.
The assistant was the Portuguese coach Nelson Morgado, whom Lens considered too demanding and too loud, and in conflict with too many people, and sought to remove. That stance ultimately precipitated Toppmöller’s departure, which he framed as a matter of self-respect over staying in the job.
Toppmöller insisted he is ready to return to the touchline quickly. He added that he does not need a sabbatical.
He had also been dismissed at Frankfurt earlier in the year.
