Dorival hails GYM trio return, cautious with Garro and Depay

For the first time in this year’s Brasileirão, coach Dorival Júnior was able to start Corinthians’ main offensive trio. Garro, Yuri Alberto, and Memphis Depay were in the starting lineup, and the result was a victory over Atlético-MG, improving the club’s position in the standings.

The option to have the trio available had been repeatedly mentioned by Dorival during this time and was brought up again in a press conference. “It was the first time in the championship, after 22 or 23 matches since I’ve been here. We’re still missing Carrillo, Martínez himself, and André. We’ve faced difficulties and very little is said about that. We had to bring up youth players that nobody believed in. Little by little, these boys have been responding to us.”

Despite the desire to count on the main names, the absences made room for youngsters, as Dorival Júnior mentioned. The main standout was Gui Negão, who had a meteoric start with goals and assists, helping Corinthians qualify in the Copa do Brasil, for example.

The coach could have started the trio in the last match, against Santos at Vila Belmiro, but caution regarding physical issues influenced the decision.

“(Memphis) Came back, had a very long trip. On the previous trip, he suffered an injury due to the travel and the match. We worked with him, there was no way he could have started against Santos. With Garro himself, we planned for 60 minutes, as he was out for a long time. In the next 15 days, we'll look to get the athletes in better condition so that from there, we can speed up the process,” he explained.

“I believe we need to find consistency and our own identity so that we can take the field with a clear understanding of what we’re planning. We’ve played many matches with quality, balance, and possession, but in some of them we end up succumbing to the conditions imposed by the opponent. That’s a challenge we’re facing.”

Corinthians’ next match will be this weekend, against Vitória, for the 30th round of the Brasileirão. After the first leg in Itaquera, the match will take place at Barradão, in Salvador-BA, on Saturday at 4pm (Brasília time).
