Sunderland Echo reports that Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle United after almost five years in charge.

The 48-year-old was in the dugout for a 4-1 pre-season defeat at Bristol City on Wednesday night.

Appointed in November 2021, he delivered the club’s first major trophy in 70 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup, and twice qualified them for the Champions League.

Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season.

The summer has proved testing, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali departing, while uncertainty persists over captain Bruno Guimaraes.
