Eder Sarabia and Elche moved closer to survival with a 1-2 win at Oviedo on Sunday, going four points clear of the highest relegation places, currently occupied by Sevilla, with five matches remaining. The coach said he is in better spirits than a week ago.
It was Elche’s first away league victory since their promotion to the top flight more than a year ago, and it arrived when they most needed it. "One of the things we have learned is to live in the mud. We have long known what we are fighting for," he said, speaking on El Larguero. He also voiced doubts about Sevilla in that regard.
With the San Mamés job set to be vacant at season’s end, Sarabia added: "Another great coach will go to Athletic, it seems they already have one. It seems Edin Terzić is done, but I know less than you."
Asked if he saw himself taking the Athletic post, he replied: "I am in no hurry. Everything will come when it has to."
Sarabia also apologised for his touchline confrontation with Valverde two months ago, during Athletic’s home win over Elche after a VAR-awarded penalty. "At San Mamés I had a silly and unjustified reaction. In that respect it was like hitting rock bottom, there are things I have to change, and I think I am behaving better now."
