Egypt will face Argentina for the first time ever in a World Cup fixture as both sides gear up for a crucial Round of 16 clash on Tuesday at Atlanta Stadium.
Egypt have made history by reaching the World Cup knockout stages for the first time while remaining unbeaten. Under manager Hossam Hassan, they have relied on strong defensive organisation, progressing from the group stage with one win and two draws.
In the Round of 32, they showed resilience by recovering from an own goal to draw 1-1 with Australia before winning 4-2 in a penalty shootout after another 120-minute battle.
The team is particularly short on options at left-back. Both Ahmed Fatouh and Ahmed El Fotouh have been ruled out with muscle and hamstring injuries, leaving the position severely weakened.
Backup defender Karim Hafez is also a major doubt after picking up a muscle strain in the last game, which could force further adjustments in the defensive setup.
Additionally, centre-back Mohamed Abdelmonem is dealing with an ankle issue and will need to pass a late fitness test to be available.
There is some positive news for Egypt, as midfielder Mohanad Lasheen returns after missing the previous match due to suspension.
Mohamed Salah also completed the full 120 minutes in the last match despite carrying a minor hamstring concern. Although he is not fully fit, the Liverpool forward is still expected to lead Egypt’s attack in this crucial encounter.
Possible Egypt starting XI: E. Martinez; Montiel, Romero, L. Martinez, Medina; De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister, Paredes; Messi, Alvarez
The match will kick off at 5pm BST on Tuesday, 7th July.
