Emiliano Martinez is weighing up international retirement after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, with the 33-year-old on 67 caps.
Two days after the loss, the Aston Villa goalkeeper posted on Instagram on Tuesday. The player said in a post that the disappointment was hard to explain, that he must reflect on many things, consider how to move forward and whether it is time to step aside.
In the same message, he noted that he had dreamed of winning the trophy again, taking it back to Argentina and making history once more.
The message also expressed regret and affirmed he had done everything he could for his country and team-mates.
Any retirement would be a significant blow for the World Cup runners-up, with Martinez a two-time Yashin Trophy winner. Lionel Scaloni’s squad in North America also included Gerónimo Rulli and Juan Musso alongside him.
