Éric Roy, head coach of Stade Brestois, has died aged 58 after three and a half years with pancreatic cancer. He leaves a lasting mark on a club and dressing room he profoundly united.
His family said in an Instagram post that he died on Wednesday, having faced illness with discretion and resilience, supported by his wife Loëtitia and children Victoria Rose and Markus.
Appointed in January 2023, he steered Brest to safety that spring, finishing 14th in a 20-team league with four relegation places. The following season brought a historic third place and a first-ever European qualification, into the Champions League, as his black Team Pirates cap became a symbol on the touchline.
Fan adoration swelled in March 2024 with giant tifos in his honour, and he was named Ligue 1 coach of the year by his peers. The next campaign ended ninth in Ligue 1 and featured a fine Champions League run to the play-offs, ranking 18th of 36 in the league phase. His final evening at Francis-Le Blé, on 17 May after a 1-1 draw with Angers, was a moment of communion with supporters.
After reflection in the spring, he accepted a two-year extension, remaining candid in public about resources and recruitment while fiercely protective of his players. His family said Brest gave him energy, joy and pride, and that he forged a rare bond with his squad.
Colleagues, including goalkeeping coach Christophe Revel, sporting director Grégory Lorenzi and president Denis Le Saint, praised his courage, leadership and humanity. Roy led Brest in a club-record 123 Ligue 1 matches, winning 50, and stands alongside the club’s great coaches as the city grieves.
