FLW's Sheffield United pundit reveals which player he believes is their most prized asset.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Sheffield United's January signings have seemingly helped them escape the clutches of Burnley and Sunderland, with the Blades now holding a five-point advantage over the third-placed Clarets.
Bringing in players with proven Championship pedigree, such as Ben Brereton Díaz and Hamza Choudhury, has been a huge boost to Chris Wilder, who has seamlessly integrated them with his season-opening squad.
If they continue to impress, several of their permanent signings are likely to attract attention in the summer, much like when they last secured promotion to the Premier League.
Both Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye departed for decent transfer fees upon their ascension to the Premier League in 2023-24, but Football League World's Blades pundit believes they must have a much stricter stance when it comes to losing their most prized assets this time around.
"We have done an outstanding job in rebuilding the squad," said Jimmy from the Blades Ramble Podcast.
"Players such as Michael Cooper, who came in for £2 million, we wouldn't entertain anything less than £20-25 million now.
"But, without a doubt, our most prized asset is Gus Hamer. When he is not in the team, we don't play in the same way and everything that we do well he appears to be involved in.
"I wouldn't be thinking about selling him, but everyone is available at the right price. I would not be happy with anything less than £30 million for Gus Hamer."
Many EFL fans would argue that Hamer has been the best player in the Championship this term and is performing to a level equal to the Premier League.
His seven goals and five assists only tell part of the story, with his underlying statistics off the charts. Not only has he been a crucial factor in Wilder's defensively solid side, with 137 ball recoveries and 28 instances of winning possession in the final third, but he also creates opportunities for those around him, registering an expected assists figure of 6.52 and creating 52 chances in the second tier, according to FotMob.
If United are to secure one of the top two spots, they will need him to maintain this form, as without him, they appear far more passive.
In the recent fixture against Luton Town, Hamer's absence was felt and despite a victory, they struggled to control the game in the same way as they usually do.
If they make it to the Premier League in 2025-26, they will need the Dutchman's influence, as no amount of money will easily replace his impact on the team.
