Ex-Sunderland and Newcastle midfielder Lee Clark is being linked with the Hartlepool United manager’s job, with the National League club yet to name a successor after Nicky Featherstone’s stint ended with a final-day defeat at Boston United.

According to Football Insider, Hartlepool have made a late move for Clark ahead of Lee Cattermole, and the outlet later said an agreement had been reached. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Post reports Clark was appointed at Rotherham in March on a short-term deal and his future there remains unconfirmed.

The 53-year-old, previously in charge of Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City, could not halt Rotherham’s slide to relegation.

Cattermole, 38, had been the early frontrunner, with suggestions that former Sunderland winger Steve Agnew, 60, would be his assistant. Agnew is on the coaching staff at League Two Salford City, having joined in February, and they lead Grimsby Town 2-1 before Friday’s second leg.

Pools face a major rebuild after releasing 13 players last week. Seven remain under contract, with offers to a further three, and supporters want a swift appointment to start the overhaul.

New owner Landon Smith and football advisors Bromby and Partners are under pressure to get the decision right.
