Lee Hendrie has given his verdict on Liam Manning's position at Norwich City after his side suffered another home defeat.
Pundit Lee Hendrie has warned Liam Manning that he will soon be under big pressure at Norwich City if he does not improve his side's form at Carrow Road.
After leading Bristol City to the Championship play-offs last season, where they were beaten by Sheffield United at the semi-final stage, Manning departed Ashton Gate in June to take over at Norwich, replacing Johannes Hoff Thorup after his dismissal in April.
While the Canaries lost winger Borja Sainz to Porto this summer, they did manage to keep hold of star striker Josh Sargent, and Manning was allowed to bring in 11 new signings during the transfer window, including big-money additions such as Mirko Topic, Pape Amadou Diallo and Mathias Kvistgaarden.
Despite the pre-season optimism, it has been a mixed start to life at Norwich for Manning, and his side fell to their third consecutive home defeat in the league as they were beaten 3-2 by Wrexham on Saturday, with three goals in just 12 second half minutes turning the game around for the Red Dragons.
Having also suffered a 3-0 defeat to Southampton in the EFL Cup second round, Manning has now lost all of his first four games in charge at Carrow Road, with the Canaries scoring just four goals and conceding 10 during those fixtures.
However, Norwich have fared much better on the road under Manning, picking up seven points from their opening three away games against Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers and Coventry City, and while they currently sit 14th in the table, they are just three points from the play-off places.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie admitted that Norwich supporters will be starting to question whether Manning is the right man for the job amid their poor home form, and he warned the 40-year-old that he will come under increasing scrutiny unless results improve quickly.
"Liam Manning is going to come under pressure, there's no doubt," Hendrie said.
"It's a club that should be among the promotion pushers, whether it be play-offs or automatic.
"They have brought him in for a reason because he had success at Bristol City last season getting them to the play-offs, and they will be expecting something similar at Norwich, that's why they wanted him.
"After three home games lost, the fans are going to start to quiz and question if he is the right man.
"Unfortunately, it's a shrewd industry, and when you think you're getting the top managers and head coaches in, expectation levels just rise through the roof.
"This will happen with Liam Manning because he's a good coach and a good manager, and Norwich will be expecting to win games."
There is no doubt that Norwich's dismal form at Carrow Road is a big cause for concern, and as Hendrie said, with expectations high among the fanbase, he must turn his side's fortunes around soon to avoid his job coming under serious threat.
Scoring goals has not been a problem for the Canaries this season, but they have already conceded nine league goals, and with familiar defensive vulnerabilities on display once again, Manning must tighten his side up at the back and make them tougher to play against, as well as instilling greater resilience when playing in front of their own fans.
After the summer spending spree, Norwich supporters are right to demand a promotion push this season, but there has been too much managerial instability at the club in recent years, so they should not be too quick to turn on Manning.
