Lee Hendrie has given his verdict on the prospect of Danny Rohl replacing Ruben Selles at Sheffield United.

Pundit Lee Hendrie does not believe Sheffield United should consider replacing head coach Ruben Selles with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

After losing to Sunderland in last season's play-off final, Sheffield United made the controversial decision to part company with popular manager Chris Wilder in the summer due to disagreements over the club's new data-driven recruitment model, but it has been a nightmare start to life at Bramall Lane for his successor Selles.

Selles has lost all of his first five games in charge of the Blades in all competitions, and some sections of the away support called for him to be sacked during the 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough before the international break, which left his side as the only team yet to pick up a point in the Championship this season.

While Selles looks set to remain in charge for the trip to Ipswich Town on Friday night, it seems his position is not completely secure, with journalist Alan Nixon revealing on Sunday that ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager Rohl has been discussed as a potential replacement behind the scenes if results do not improve.

Rohl spent almost two years in charge of the Owls, first guiding them to Championship survival against all the odds before overseeing a respectable 12th-placed finish last season, but after a summer of speculation over his future, he departed Hillsborough just over a week before the start of the new season amid the club's off-field turmoil and financial problems.

The 36-year-old is believed to be keen for his next job to be in England or Germany, and Nixon claims that, despite his links with Wednesday, he would be open to taking over on the other side of the Steel City if United came calling.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Hendrie admitted that Selles needs results quickly if he is to keep his job at Sheffield United, but he insisted that appointing Rohl would be too much of a gamble for the Blades given his Wednesday connections.

"This would be absolutely outrageous if it did actually happen," Hendrie said.

"It's a huge game for Ruben Selles on Friday, there's no doubt about that.

"The start he's had has not been great.

"They've only scored one league goal, and only two when you add the cup game.

"They've really struggled in front of goal, but they've got a really strong squad.

"I know there are not loads of managers out there available, but I'm not sure whether this would be the right solution.

"I think they would have to get it right, but I think this could end up being a bit of a gamble, which could reflect on the rest of the season.

"They have to get going, there's no doubt about that.

"They need to turn a corner.

"If this was to happen, I'm not sure Danny Rohl would be the right one to go in at Sheffield United for obvious reasons."

Sheffield United would risk Ruben Selles repeat with Danny Rohl appointment

Few Sheffield United supporters wanted Wilder to be sacked in the summer, so Selles was already on the back foot as soon as he took over at Bramall Lane, and while Rohl may be viewed as a better manager than the Spaniard, he could face a similar uphill battle to win over the fan base.

Some Blades fans may revel in the appointment of a manager who was once loved by their Steel City rivals before his acrimonious exit this summer, but in a recent interview, Rohl revealed that he still holds strong affection for Wednesday, and his Hillsborough past would likely be used against him if results were to decline.

Having proven himself at Championship level, Rohl could be a gamble worth taking for the Blades, but his appointment would be too controversial, and given their current predicament, the board cannot afford to get the next appointment wrong if they decide to part company with Selles.
