In a way, Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Serie A and Juventus played a role in the Bianconeri’s recent struggles. Fabio Paratici, who was behind the move, seems to have no regrets about bringing the Portuguese to Turin.
Ronaldo was roped in when Juve were keen on taking the next step to winning the Champions League. They had reached the final twice in the five years prior to that but the move backfired, landing the Bianconeri in financial trouble, legal issues and later led to a points deduction.
Paratici spoke to Corriere della Sera in a detailed interview today and he was asked some specifics around his career, certain decisions and even the time at Tottenham.
When asked about whether he regrets the Ronaldo transfer, he said: “Precious for Juve, important for everyone, just like Mourinho was at Roma. A championship needs great players. We all wanted the Champions League, and we could have won it in our first year. The elimination by Ajax still sticks in my mind.
“The problem was that by scoring a goal per game, Cristiano made life too easy for his teammates, who had already won so much. That’s why we changed coaches, to try a shake-up.”
Paratici also claimed that there were no problems between CR7 and Max Allegri, despite reports at that point suggesting otherwise.
“No, Allegri is the most intelligent of all; his ability to connect with the players makes the difference. Sarri had some difficulties at the beginning, being more tactically fundamentalist, but then he adapted. And he won the Scudetto too; many have forgotten that.”
While it is fair to say that the move did backfire on the Old Lady, it wasn’t Ronaldo himself who was the issue. It was the running of the club which held them back, as they couldn’t ideally afford to keep paying the Portuguese amidst the financial impact of covid.
