Barcelona’s search for a new number nine this summer has slowly but surely dissolved into an effort to keep the one they already have in the squad.

In recent days, the possibility of signing a new striker has been replaced by the possibility of Ferran Torres leaving the club amid interest from PSG.

The Spanish forward has less than 12 months left on his current deal at the club and is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract.

When asked what needs to happen for him to sign a new contract, Ferran put the onus on Barça to come and show him that they want to keep him.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona remain determined to keep Ferran, with the club prepared to sanction a departure only under one specific condition.

Barcelona will only consider Ferran’s departure if the player verbally communicates his desire to leave.

Otherwise, the 26-year-old is expected to remain at the club.

Barça continue to view him as an important part of Hansi Flick’s project and would only reassess their position if the player himself requested an exit.

Ferran has so far not done that, although he has also not shut down the exit talks once and for all, leaving the door open to all possibilities.

Ferran wants to know Barça care

Ferran’s words clearly reflected one thing: he wants the Catalan club to show that they care about him and want to keep him beyond 2027.

From his perspective, not being offered a deal yet despite being in the final 12 months of his contract could lead to some insecurities.

Having scored the World Cup-winning goal for Spain, he is at an all-time high in his career, and it is understandable that he wants to make the most of it.

As for Barça, the club are trying to push his renewal talks to September to accommodate them after the new La Liga season begins.

Renewal or sale?

Barcelona’s position is becoming increasingly clear.

The club do not want to lose Ferran this summer and still see him as an important member of Flick’s squad, particularly following Robert Lewandowski’s departure.

However, their actions towards the player must also reflect that stance. Barça also cannot afford to let his situation drag on until late in the window.

For now, both parties appear willing to continue together, subject to talks about the future, but the next step will be decisive.

If Barcelona open formal renewal talks and convince Ferran that he remains central to the project, all this exit talk can come to an end.

If not, PSG will continue knocking on the door until they eventually burst it open.
