Vasco have publicly prioritised cutting costs and will miss the next Conmebol Libertadores, yet the club continue to attract promising signings, largely drawn by Fernando Diniz. The head coach has become a decisive factor in recruitment.
According to Globo.com, Diniz personally led talks with Alan Saldivia and recommended his signing. His calls came while Vasco and Colo-Colo negotiated, and were instrumental in the Uruguayan defender accepting the switch.
Having faced Saldivia while in charge of Fluminense, Diniz identified the defender as a fit for his style and kept in contact for several days. The approach helped cement Saldivia’s preference for the Rio side.
Diniz said his work centres on players and supporters, and that he seeks to improve individuals in tandem with the team’s play. He noted that word travels quickly in Brazil, that Saldivia had tracked him in the Libertadores and felt he would fit, which made conversations simple.
His role in this window extends beyond identifying targets. He has held calls with players at different stages of interest, including at least two with a forward about a possible switch, discussing football, fit, family and settling in Rio de Janeiro.
Diniz argued that, although this is not Vasco’s finest moment, the club’s stature and fervent support still count. He pointed to a near miss in the Copa do Brasil and said last season lifted belief, adding that the team are gradually becoming more attractive to players.
