Fifa apologises over private investment plan and reiterates full backing for Infantino | OneFootball

Fifa has apologised over its plan to admit private investors, while restating full backing for Gianni Infantino. The announcement followed a crisis meeting in Morocco, the governing body said.

It acknowledged errors after the proposal leaked to the media and pledged to prevent a repeat. The leadership sought to project unity after days of upheaval.

Council members present renewed their support for Infantino, described as the only official elected by Fifa’s 211 member associations. He had faced criticism since the leak, including from some within his own team.

It accepted that the Council and member federations should not have been excluded from the process, which should have been handled differently, while maintaining that regulations were respected.

Infantino also reaffirmed support for secretary general Mattias Grafström and the administration. In a letter to staff, Grafström had expressed regret over a series of sad and condemnable events, while senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned on Friday in outright opposition to the project.

The meeting is intended to restore confidence, and Fifa will take all necessary measures to defend its integrity and reputation.
