FIFA has suspended Paraguayan commentator Jorge Chipi Vera’s World Cup accreditation after an on-air tirade about Miguel Almiron’s dismissal during Türkiye v Paraguay, which finished 1-0.

L'Équipe reports that the ABC television broadcaster has also been barred from any participation or coverage linked to the tournament.

The outburst came overnight from Friday to Saturday in Group D, lasting close to two minutes after the heavily debated red card. The former Newcastle player became the first footballer sent off after covering his mouth.

On air, Vera repeatedly called officials thieves, claimed FIFA had killed football and blamed Gianni Infantino, before moving into vulgar insults.

He later posted a lengthy apology video on his X account, but the sanctions remained in place.
