FIFPro Europe hits out at FIFA plan ‘to sell World Cup stakes’ | OneFootball

FIFPro Europe has voiced deep concern over Gianni Infantino’s reported plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors, and has urged FIFA to reconsider immediately. The Times reported the proposal this week.

The union, chaired by Frenchman David Terrier, said the proposal to turn the World Cup and other FIFA competitions into investable assets carries potentially far-reaching implications for player welfare, the international match calendar and the sport’s future governance.

FIFPro Europe criticised the process, saying such a sweeping project has largely been developed behind closed doors and is close to being agreed without meaningful consultation with those most affected.

It said the plan raises fundamental concerns about global governance and the integrity of the game, warning that stakeholder involvement at FIFA has long been limited. Commercial influence should not outweigh the voices of those who play, support and sustain the sport, the union added, and it would never back such a model.

It also noted that neither FIFPro nor players have voting rights within FIFA, yet they will bear the consequences of any decision long after the current leadership has left office. The organisation called on FIFA to reconsider its proposal without delay.
