Flamengo supporters in Medellín reported a friendly mood with home fans despite unrest that stopped their Copa Libertadores tie. According to Globo.com, there were no incidents between Colombian and Brazilian fans.
The match at Estadio Atanasio Girardot was halted after three minutes. Home fans were told to leave and police cleared the organised groups. Flamengo’s section was released around midnight, more than two hours after the stoppage.
Eric Barceleiro, 39, said interactions were calm and that the barras’ anger targeted their own board, team, FIFA and Conmebol. Some locals even asked to swap shirts, he added.
He said protests had been expected and believed Conmebol very likely knew, yet the fixture still went ahead. He felt safe in the away end but was unsure about outside conditions as they awaited release, frustrated by the lack of football.
A heavy sanction and a forfeit are viewed as likely, pending a Disciplinary Unit review. It is not certain, though seen as the most probable outcome and expected by Flamengo. With the next round in two weeks, Article 24.2 states that if a team is responsible for a definitive suspension, cancellation or abandonment, the opponent wins 3-0.
