Flamengo celebrated reaching the Libertadores quarter-finals by aiming a social media dig at former midfielder Gerson after eliminating Cruzeiro at the Maracanã. According to Coluna Do Fla, the club’s official account posted the taunt on its channels.

The Rio side beat Cruzeiro 2-1 on Wednesday, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Mineirão, for a 3-2 aggregate. Arrascaeta and Samuel Lino scored, with Romero replying for the visitors.

The account posted a video of the Joker, the Batman villain whose nickname Gerson carried at Flamengo. It referenced a cinema night at the Maracanã with popcorn emojis, a possible nod to his subdued last-16 displays.

Inside a packed stadium, more than 68,000 home fans jeered the Cruzeiro number eight almost every time he touched the ball.

He helped build the Cruzeiro equaliser, yet failed to track back for both Flamengo goals, moments that proved decisive.

Despite winning two Libertadores, one Copa do Brasil and three Brazilian titles with Flamengo, relations collapsed behind the scenes. The then captain had renewed his deal and enjoyed idol status, but pushed for an exit in 2025.

His transfer to Zenit further damaged the bond, then a R$ 42 million image-rights lawsuit against Flamengo turned acclaim into open hostility.

After a quiet spell in Russia, Gerson returned in 2026 to join Cruzeiro. This was his second game back at the Maracanã against his former club, the first came in March in the league, when he played 78 minutes amid boos in a 2-0 defeat.
