Flamengo are in Portugal preparing for the season’s second half, taking a cautious stance in the market to protect squad balance while weighing reinforcements and exits.
Talks with Aston Villa over Emerson Royal have been halted after a 9 million euro offer, below expectations. The right-back, contracted to December 2028, plays regularly and is Varela’s only deputy, so a sale would require an irresistible bid.
Luiz Araújo attracted Middle East interest, but Flamengo have ruled out a move for now. Cruzeiro are also keen, yet the club will not strengthen a direct rival before their Libertadores last-16 tie. Exits could still happen for players seeking minutes, such as Luiz Araújo and Everton Cebolinha.
A midfielder and a centre-forward are priorities set by head coach Leonardo Jardim, with left-back options monitored. Flamengo have checked on Thiago Almada and prefer targets up to 26, focusing on technical quality, speed and fitness, and want arrivals ready for 12 August at Cruzeiro.
“The window only opens on the 19th. The last two were heavy on spending, Flamengo do not have infinite money. We have needs, but we are not desperate,” he told FlamengoTV.
Discussing Danilo of Botafogo and Zenit’s Luiz Henrique, both with Brazil at the tournament, president Bap said: “Players want to wait until the end of the Cup to see if they gain value. Am I going to wait until 22 July to bring one of these players? There are many variables,” he told Charla Podcast.
