The 23rd round of the Brasileirão closed on Monday with Internacional drawing 1-1 with Remo at Beira-Rio, a result which, combined with Flamengo’s Sunday rout of Mirassol, dropped the São Paulo club into the relegation zone.

Mirassol stayed on 23 points after that heavy defeat. They were outside the bottom four on Sunday night, but the final fixture did not go their way.

Internacional struck first, Carbonero scoring after three minutes. Remo levelled with the last kick, Vitor Bueno blasting in from distance.

The draw lifted Internacional out of the bottom four to 16th on 24 points. Remo moved to 23, third from bottom, with Vasco on 22 and Chapecoense on 11 also in the drop.

At the top, Palmeiras lead with 48 points from 23 games, Flamengo have 45 from 22. Both have dropped 21 points, Flamengo are ahead on points lost and have a better goal difference, 25 to 21, so they control their own fate.

Flamengo can go top on Saturday, 22, at Mineirão against Cruzeiro if they win, at least for a day. Palmeiras play on Sunday, 23, against Vasco da Gama in São Paulo.

Before that, Flamengo face Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday, 19, the second leg starting at 21:30 Brasília time.
