Flamengo are seeking to postpone their 30 May league trip to Coritiba, with four Brazil call-ups already ruling players out and the list may grow. It is their final match before the World Cup pause.
According to Globo.com, Léo Pereira, Danilo, Alex Sandro and Paquetá will miss out after being selected by Brazil, and the club have expressed their unhappiness with the calendar to the CBF in informal talks.
Brazil face Panama in Rio de Janeiro on 31 May, and the called-up players are due to report to Granja Comary on 27 May. Releasing them from the friendly is not under consideration by the CBF.
Flamengo have sounded out moving the Coritiba game to the second half of the year, arguing there are dates available as both teams are already out of the Copa do Brasil. The initial response from the CBF was negative. Flamengo already have a postponed league match against Mirassol, still awaiting a new date.
Speaking after Wednesday’s win over Estudiantes, head coach Leonardo Jardim appealed for common sense, noting that in previous jobs fixtures were postponed when five players were called up. He said restricting a team by nine players would not be fair. Flamengo want a postponement, he added, but the outcome remains uncertain.
Jardim’s tally of potential absentees also covers likely international calls for Varela, De la Cruz and Arrascaeta with Uruguay, Carrascal with Colombia and Plata with Ecuador. Ecuador face Saudi Arabia on 30 May and Colombia meet Costa Rica on the first of June. Uruguay have no fixtures before the World Cup.
